Rooted in a strong modernist aesthetic, Studio B's fresh, minimalist design, elegant site integration and seamless interplay between architecture, interiors and nature have garnered increasing national attention since the firm's founding in Aspen, Colorado in 1991. With numerous prestigious design awards received over the last decade, and recognition by the American Institute of Architects/Colorado as the organization's '2009 Firm of the Year', Studio B's influence and growing portfolio of modernist work have continued to draw attention far beyond the Rocky Mountain West. The firm opened a new studio in Boulder in 2014 to better serve its expanding clientele in the Front Range.
At Studio B, it’s all about taking a journey together—a journey defined by discovery of oneself, one’s lifestyle and one’s view of the world. We ‘live’ creativity, art, design and all that is associated with ideas that enlighten and open our minds.
The firm's work—set in diverse residential and civic environs across the United States, draws innovators, art collectors and design-sensitive clients who want to live and work within spaces that inspire others to follow. Although the firm's work has been featured in multiple local, national and international publications, Studio B's designers continue to raise the bar through rigorous exploration into sustainable approaches, innovative use of materials, and openness to new building technologies. As a result, their rich design solutions bring unexpected delights to those who inhabit, frequent or work within the homes, churches, schools and community buildings they create.
Discerning clients—drawn to the firm's visually evocative yet highly functional architecture, detailed service and active engagement of the client—find that Studio B's inventive approach not only exceeds expectations, but elevates and enriches one's life experience overall. The resultant inclusive, collaborative design process—known for genuinely valuing client and community input and ideas—brings an added intimate dimension to the team's evolving conversation of intellectual inquiry, exploration and discovery.
Studio B brings a rare level of artistry to their notable designs elegantly accomplished through an unforgettable, egoless, engaging experience that catalyzes new clients to seek them out and former patrons to work with them again.
Immersed in a culture of exploration and collaboration, the firm is known for producing inspired modern design that encourages clients to see themselves in a different light—to view architecture and space in new ways. A passion for modernism, innovative process, and sense of adventure allow the very best ideas to incubate and thrive. High energy, focused teams, weekly pinups, rigorous research and an abundance of passion drive the design process from beginning to end. Collaboration, and the integration and formation of ideas among clients and peers undergird an intense environment fueled by pure possibility communicated through sketches, physical model building, and the creation of computer-generated 3D rendering.
Studio B is about a lifestyle of innovation—a never-ending search for great design that reaches beyond the mundane. An extraordinary sensitivity to the environment and the materials selected drives the design process. The intent is to create spaces and projects quietly bound to their surroundings rather than shouting their presence. Creating simple design parti’s which respond to the unique qualities of each individual site results in a “quiet”, but powerful architecture that is respectful to the landscape. Juxtapositions of rich, textured surface materials and attention to design details, used minimally and modestly, is a design signature used by Studio B to give a deep meaning and relationship between spaces to each project. By exploiting variation in the properties of each material to the greatest degree—through the use of pattern, light, repetition, texture and more—beautiful, detailed palettes are expressed and articulated. The seamless integration of sustainable concepts—understanding how place and environment impact each building through light, views, site, orientation and new technologies—completes the singular modern aesthetic manifested by Studio B.
There is no boundary between architecture and interior design. They are as integral to a beautifully executed project as is landscape architecture and engineering. The interior design work of Studio B seamlessly integrates the architecture of the interior spaces, materials/textures, furniture/furnishings and often involves collaboration with a multitude of talented artisans, craftsman and design consultants. Our interiors often employ an element of contrast and we draw upon current contemporary design, incorporating timeless furniture pieces and explore the rich and textural qualities of naturally found materials and fabrics.
Among the firm’s accolades are the 2009 AIA Colorado Firm of the Year Award Firm Award; Distinguished Design awards from the Western Mountain Region chapter of the American Institute of Architects; dozens of design awards from local and state chapters of AIA Colorado, and membership amongst the AIA College of Fellows for Design Principal Scott Lindenau, FAIA.
Studio members regularly serve University studio critics, lecture regularly on design, sit on jury awards programs and are board members for civic institutions in the community.
